About Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)

What is Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP)?
Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy is a well-researched, effective form of Experiential Dynamic Therapy (EDT). “Experiential” means it is designed for you to experience, examine, and address your feelings directly in the session. “Dynamic” means it will help you change and grow in the moment. The effectiveness of ISTDP in delivering a wide range of health benefits — including helping with Medically Unexplained Physical Symptoms (MUPS) — has been shown in numerous clinical studies.
In ISTDP therapy we pay close, caring attention to the moment-to-moment interactions between you and the therapist. By observing shifts in interactions, closeness, and defenses, you and I collaborate effectively to help you overcome resistance and achieve rapid results.
For example, you might come to therapy noticing anxiety, stress, depression, or difficulties in relationships at work or home. As we work together to remove these difficulties, you begin to feel better — happier and more satisfied in your life. You will notice feeling more love and connection with those around you as we remove the barriers to achieving more serenity and peace in your life.
As we grow up, everyone develops ways to adapt to situations in life. Some of the adaptations that helped us cope with earlier life circumstances may not be as useful in today’s professional or personal settings.
How ISTDP can help you in person in Palo Alto or virtually throughout California.
Together, we can use Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy to work towards activating your strengths, enabling you to process and work through emotions that have been causing symptoms and holding you back. With my support, you can become capable of handling feelings that previously were too painful to face, allowing you to gain clearer self-understanding, relief from symptoms, and ability to live more fully.
The goal of our treatment together is to enable you to successfully manage things in your own life so you no longer need therapy. It’s never too late to begin this work.
I offer ISTDP sessions virtually for clients across California and in person at my Palo Alto office, which is easily accessible to Portola Valley, Stanford, Berkeley, and the entire Bay Area.
